Why What You Wear Matters More Than You Think
At TMB, we’ve always believed that what sits on your skin should not only feel comfortable but also function well and be good for your health.
This is why what it’s made from, how it moves, and how it supports you throughout your day; is at the forefront of our design process.
Because the reality is, much of modern clothing isn’t made from nature.
It’s made from petrochemicals.
What are petrochemicals?
Petrochemicals are derived from petroleum, crude oil and natural gas. The same raw materials used to create plastics are also used to produce many of the fabrics we wear daily.
Through industrial processing, these materials are transformed into synthetic fibres.
The most common being:
-
Polyester
-
Nylon
-
Acrylic
-
Elastane
They’re everywhere. In activewear, in fast fashion, in everyday basics designed for stretch and ease.
And while they’ve become the norm, they weren’t always.
Why the industry relies on them
Synthetic fibres or as some term 'plastic' clothing changed fashion. They allowed clothing to be produced faster, cheaper, and at scale.
They’re:
-
Cost-effective
-
Durable
-
Wrinkle-resistant
-
Easy to care for
From a production perspective, they make sense.
But at TMB, we always come back to a different question:
Does it make sense for the person wearing it? And for the environment?
The unseen impact
There’s a disconnect between how these fabrics perform commercially and how they feel experientially.
They don’t breathe with the body
Synthetic fibres tend to sit on the skin, rather than working with it. They can trap heat and moisture, which affects comfort and disrupts our hormone health.
They shed microplastics
With every machine wash (especially high spin), tiny plastic fibres called micro plastics, are released into our waterways and air. These particles don’t disappear; they accumulate in the air we breathe and into the food chain. They enter our bodies and the latest research has found these plastic particles in the faeces of newborns.
They don’t return to the earth
Unlike natural fibres, synthetics don’t biodegrade. They remain, long after the garment has served its purpose.
They rely on non-renewable resources
Petrochemicals begin with fossil fuels, a finite resource with a lasting environmental cost.
A more considered way of dressing
Creating awareness around this topic will inform you to make your own choices.
Because when you begin to understand what your clothing is made from, your relationship with it shifts.
You choose differently.
You notice how something feels on your skin; not just in the moment you try it on, but hours into wearing it.
You consider Longevity. Versatility. Purpose. Health.
Why we choose natural fibres
At TMB, our collections are intentionally created using natural fibres, linen, cotton, wool, silk.
Not because it’s a trend, but because it’s a return to what works.
These fabrics:
-
Breathe with the body
-
Regulate body temperature
-
Soften and evolve over time
-
Biodegrade naturally
They are derived by nature, refined by craftsmanship, and worn in a way that feels effortless.
A return to natural fibres
There’s a quiet shift happening; a return to fabrics that are breathable, biodegradable, and aligned with the body.
Linen, cotton, wool, and silk have been worn for generations, not just for their beauty, but for how they function.
They move with us.
They age with us.
They soften over time.
And when chosen well, they last.
Buy once, buy well
Fewer pieces. Better choices. Garments that feel good, wear well, and make sense.
Not just for a season, but for years to come.
Because what we wear isn’t just about how we look.
It’s about how we dress today and the future health impact on us and the world around us.
